Maths Home Learning

Today we looked at the NZ Maths website  http://www.nzmaths.co.nz/introductory-video   for ideas we could use to use maths around home.
We could put together a kete of maths equipment to share our learning with our families.  Our kete might have:  a ruler pencils, highlighters, sharpies, dice, calculator, maps or bus timetables, cards, building blocks, play money, counters, posters or supermarket flyers, shop prices, clocks, magazines, newspaper photos, calendar, measuring tape, rubber duckies!
Take a look at the E-Ako part of the website too!

HOME LEARNING IN ROOM 7

As well as the optional Home Learning Challenge, each week everyone will have basic fact, spelling and reading tasks to support their learning in numeracy and literacy.
Basic Facts:
Everyone has done a basic fact Ladder test, which shows gaps in their learning.  Your child will show you how to use this to know which facts they need to practice.  We have talked about lots of different ways of practising basic facts (such as measuring when cooking, reading prices at the supermarket, adding or subtracting numberplates when out in the car, as well as lists of numbers!  The children use the basic fact box on their sheet to note the activities they do each week.
Reading:
Everyone reads every day…..so this part of the sheet is to record the name of the book.  The children may record a book they have read to you, one you have read to them, or a book they have shared with a brother or sister.
Spelling:
Everyone has done an Essential Spelling List assessment, and the highlighted list in Home Learning books shows the words children spelled correctly in this test.  Children will have eight words to learn each week:  they will write in interesting, challenging sentence, underlining the target word in each sentence.
