Artsplash

Wow -what an awesome show!  The children performed brilliantly at the Michael Fowler Centre last week and really enjoyed themselves.  This was the first time I had been to the show and I was soo impressed by the children's singing.  They had really practiced hard and learnt all their words.  A big thanks needs to go to Naomi Johnson who so ably prepared the children for this show.
Well done to all- we were very proud.

We have been busy lately replanting the butterfly/herb garden and the vegie garden up behind the hall.  Things seem to be growing well.  We also have now started up the compost behind the hall- feel free to send along small amounts of suitable waste for the compost if you wish.  Some children have been researching about composting and worm farms as part of their reading and will be sharing this at our assembly in week 10.

We hope you enjoy our stories and artworks as much as we enjoyed creating them! Celebrating Matariki on PhotoPeach

Athletics with Geoff... Getting Higher with Greater Accuracy!

This morning we were learning to lift knees high to get better clearance when we jump, hop or hurdle. Hopping was tricky but made easier when you kept looking straight ahead to keep your balance. Keeping your other leg behind you, also helps with balance. Running quickly along the ladders was challenging and made us lift our knees high and fast! Then we practiced accurate baton chnges, to prevent the disappointment of letting the team down by dropping the baton! Lift those knees high! on PhotoPeach

Exploring Symmetry

It was really fun getting to make our own symmetrical patterns. The challenging part was naming the shapes and making sure they really were symmetrical. Elaina: "I had fun making a ginormous snowflake with Maggie." Creating Symmetrical Patterns on PhotoPeach

Athletics Training Begins Today

"When we did some stretches they were really challenging and hard and I could really feel the muscles being stretched" Liam "Leaning over backwards requires a lot of flexibility" Anna "We did some pretty cool stuff like awesome jumping, really fun racing, and super-duper stretching" Emma "The hardest stretching was leaning back as hard as you can" Ola "The jumping we did was really fun. We had to stand on the mat and jump on number 1 to the front, 2 was back, 3 to the left and 4 to the right" Nikko "We had our juicy fruit before morning tea, then came back to the classroom, talked about how we felt about athletics today, then wrote about it". Tawa Zone Cross Country Results

Congratulations to our speedy runners, Ryan,Naomi,Maggie and Haylee who qualified to represent Tawa Zone in the Wellington Zone Cross Country event. We are very proud of you and will be cheering when you race again next week!

Anyone for Fruit?

We've been thinking about ways of reducing the litter in our playground... so many children bring packets of food for morning tea! We have decided to "munch as we work"! This is our fruitbowl: we put our fruit in here, Mrs Barbalich cuts it up into tasty pieces and we now munch morning tea as we work during the morning. Aha! Now we don't have to worry about getting empty packets into the litter bin and we can play all through our morning tea time.
What's more- we know the fruit we are eating is far more healthy for us than the packets of snacks we used to eat!

Today we got kitted out with inline skates, helmets and safety gear for a fun Hockey on Wheels session. Balancing and moving forwards were rather challenging and we felt an amazing sense of achievement when we got it right! Hockey on Wheels on PhotoPeach

Keeping Safe Online

Today we talked about keeping safe online and started making some rules for Online Safety. We'd like our families to explore Hector's World and talk about our internet safety at home too!

Talk Moves

We have been learning about talk moves.  You can "revoice" what another person has said.  It helps your thinking because your brain has to start working!  You can find different ways to solve a problem... like "3+3=6"  or "3x2=6".  When you restate, you say it in your own words..... you have to explain your thinking!

Maths Home Learning

Today we looked at the NZ Maths website  http://www.nzmaths.co.nz/introductory-video   for ideas we could use to use maths around home.
We could put together a kete of maths equipment to share our learning with our families.  Our kete might have:  a ruler pencils, highlighters, sharpies, dice, calculator, maps or bus timetables, cards, building blocks, play money, counters, posters or supermarket flyers, shop prices, clocks, magazines, newspaper photos, calendar, measuring tape, rubber duckies!
Take a look at the E-Ako part of the website too!

HOME LEARNING IN ROOM 7

As well as the optional Home Learning Challenge, each week everyone will have basic fact, spelling and reading tasks to support their learning in numeracy and literacy.
Basic Facts:
Everyone has done a basic fact Ladder test, which shows gaps in their learning.  Your child will show you how to use this to know which facts they need to practice.  We have talked about lots of different ways of practising basic facts (such as measuring when cooking, reading prices at the supermarket, adding or subtracting numberplates when out in the car, as well as lists of numbers!  The children use the basic fact box on their sheet to note the activities they do each week.
Reading:
Everyone reads every day…..so this part of the sheet is to record the name of the book.  The children may record a book they have read to you, one you have read to them, or a book they have shared with a brother or sister.
Spelling:
Everyone has done an Essential Spelling List assessment, and the highlighted list in Home Learning books shows the words children spelled correctly in this test.  Children will have eight words to learn each week:  they will write in interesting, challenging sentence, underlining the target word in each sentence.

PLEASE VISIT OUT BLOG AT http://2014r7sfx.blogspot.co.nz/
FOR REGULAR UPDATES ON CLASS ACTIVITIES.
We look forward to reading your comments and feedback on what we have been up to!
